On June 10, 2010 Water for People handed out it's annual Kenneth J. Miller Founders' Awards. This award recognizes volunteers who show outstanding service to the efforts of Water for People. Doug Campbellwas the recipient for the Wester Canada Section of the American Water Works Association. Doug is the manager of the Water Treatment Plant in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba. He has been an operator since 1982 and has served as manager for 11 years. Doug has been an active member the Water for People committee since 1996 and has spent countless hours organizing and running silent auctions at the MWWA Annual Conferences where all the profits go to Water for People. Doug says he is quite honoured to be recognized but maintains that this award is more for the people who have donated to the auctions and have contributed to the cause of bringing clean drinking water to people of the world. Check out the Water for People website to see the names of the other recipients- or to donate to this great organization at www.waterforpeople.org.
The City of Calgary's Water outreach team is taking a different approach this year to educate residents about their connection to the river. Storm drains empty into our rivers and stormwater (melting snow and rainwater) gets little or no treatment before it goes to the rivers. With the help of a local movie prop company, six replicas of storm drains with cattails sprouting out of them, a fish diving in, or a family of ducks waddling out are helping to build awareness that the river begins at the storm drain and that “the Bow is below.
Click link to take an animated journey on how stormwater can carry pollutants, like oil and gas, from your driveway or fertilizer from your lawn to our rivers.
June 7, 2010: WorkForWater.org offers resources for recruiters, job seekers
The Water Environment Federation (WEF) and the American Water Works Association (AWWA) today announced the launch of WorkForWater.org, a collaborative Web site featuring resources for water recruiters, career seekers and students. The site addresses one of the water communitys top concerns in the coming decade the expected retirement of 30% of the water workforce and the need to recruit new talent to the field. AWWA and WEF in March announced the Work for Water outreach campaign, which promotes water careers as both professionally fulfilling and aligned to the greatest public health and environmental cause of our day access to safe water and sanitation services.
